the dust files

A oracle for the world we inhabit.

                                                          ATMOSPHERE:  Santa Monica

Atmoshpere!

                                         Armed Forces Memorial, Santa Monica

I was intrigued by the re-blogged photos i last put up, and the eerie quality they posessed.  I was keen to know what the subject of the photos would look like in day light.  To this end, i have put my questionable detective skills to misuse and found this photo above.  It is off the Armed Forces Memorial in Santa Monica, Calif.  And judging from the photos above, taken during the hours of daylight, this place possess no special eerie quality at all.  I know, you maybe have to be there to really capture the feel of a place, but i think icanhover (the original blogger) caught something special in their photos taken at night.  Evidence that atmosphere is all about time and space.  The space being where your head is at and how you view something, and the timing in this case, at night.  There’s a lesson here somewhere…

santa monica - tonight

this place has the eek of tim burton to it at night. i was wandering. i am found.

if you think this is eerie, you should visit IslandMagee, 40mins outside Belfast. day or night, it gives off a vibe of “sleepy hallow” Tim Burton style! There’s fields that still have the old hanging trees in them from the time of the United Irishmen …. If those tress could talk. Don’t you just love the atmosphere of somewhere that’s grips you with a mix of panic and compulsion, no, just me? :-)

And now for something completely different…

A BANKSY! (click this link)

Banksy, the “gorilla style” British street Artist, has been nominated for an Academy Award for his directorial debut .

The elusive graffiti artist is up for best documentary for Exit Through The Gift Shop, alongside producer Jaimie D’Cruz. He also appears in the film, only in shadow with a hoodie over his head and with his voice altered to make him unrecognisable.

“This is a big surprise,” he said in a statement. “I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for. The last time there was a naked man covered in gold paint in my house, it was me.”

Still, the question remains: Will the he show up for the February 27 ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood? And if he wins, will he actually take the stage, say a few words and let the world see his face? (i for one hope he remains elusive, there isn’t enough mystery in the world for me.)

“I highly doubt it,” said John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, where Exit Through The Gift Shop premiered a year ago. “Would this be THAT moment? I still doubt it. I’ve still never even met the person.”

An international figure in graffiti art, Banksy is known for travelling the world and anonymously leaving his signature pieces in public areas while refusing to reveal his real name.

His film follows the evolution of the Los Angeles street art scene as it builds to a crescendo of bandwagon worship for the latest hot, new thing, an artist Banksy himself “discovers” who goes by the name Mr Brainwash. The film is up against Gasland, Inside Job, Restrepo and Waste Land at the Oscars.

Having watched the other nominees for the coveted “gold man”, i think Restrepo will win the Statue.  Not because its the best film, but because its a war documentary that brings home the harsh realities for the American troops deployed in Afghanistan.  (Remember the phenomenal success of Hurt Locker.)

You GO Banksy; you will allways be the “Dread Pirate Roberts” to me.  Stay hidden, keep the mystery alive!!

Why Dust?

A huge star plowing through interstellar dust   (click to link on story)

We are all but one in the same; we are made from the very same matter that makes stars shine bright in Galaxy’s light years away, i.e:  All the elements heavier than H (and perhaps He) are formed in stars, and they distribute these elements in supernova explosions. New stars and planetary systems are formed from the condensation of debris in a solar nebula. The heavier elements go into forming the planets around that star. If life forms on a planet, it does so using the materials available, including Fe, Ca, C, etc. So, the Fe in your blood, the Ca in your bones, and the C in your DNA all originally formed in an exploding star.  I for one think it amazing that some part of my DNA comes from the energy of an exploding star!

“Dust as we are, the immortal spirit grows
Like harmony in music; there is a dark
Inscrutable workmanship that reconciles
Discordant elements, makes them cling together
In one society. How strange, that all
The terrors, pains, and early miseries,
Regrets, vexations, lassitudes interfused
Within my mind, should e’er have borne a part,
And that a needful part, in making up
The calm existence that is mine when I
Am worthy of myself! Praise to the end!”      William Wordsworth (1770 - 1850)

Look into the space around you, marvel in the wonder that your constantly moving particles are held together by energy.  Take comfort and glorious joy in the fact that an exploding star created enough energy to cause nuclear fusion, and its dust is now in you!

Steven Tyler: The only reason to watch American Idol

I don’t want to lower the tone of the blog or anything, but, have you seen the new season of American Idol? I’m not usually one to watch “car-crash” T.V. (or do i mean i don’t usually admit to it…) but a happy accident brought my attention to the American Idol programme currently showing on ITV 2, Thursday and Fridays nights. What kept me watching was Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame, and big lips notoriety. He was funny, instantly like-able, brutally honest (but never cruel), the man has the charisma of a snake charmer, and exudes just the right amount of sexual innuendo to be playful. Genius.

All those coming upon (no pun intended) Steve for the first time will not be dissappointed by his obvious and natural IDOL status. The man is quite simply a legend.

Tell me you don’t get the slightest tingle off excitement at the thought of a place as magical as Alaska?  Ill admit, Polar Bears scare the shit out me (did you see the Arctic Jaws link, scary) but the experience would be well worth the mauling!!! ha-ha

tumblrbot asked: WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT ON YOUR PLANET?

I am desperate to see the whole Pacific west coast of America; from Mexico straight up to Washington State.  If I’m lucky i will be able to make my way up through Vancouver, onwards up to Alaska…getting excited thinking about it. :)

Certain vs Uncertain

And so it is with this quote by Alfred Whitehead that I advance, certain that just because I write words down and embed them somwhere, does not mean they will be read or understood. Yet, I’m still so uncertain of their impact.
